Preference may be given to applicants with experience/training in hydrogeology and experience at or involving the Hanford Nuclear Site. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES The purpose of this position is to evaluate current potential cleanup activities and technologies at the Hanford Site in Washington State – particularly as they impact the vadose zone and groundwater – and determine whether other alternatives may better protect Oregon and the Columbia River. This requires the incumbent to develop and maintain working relationships with technical staffs of various Federal, State and Tribal agencies, contractors, and public interest groups, and to translate and explain highly technical issues to the news media and the lay public. Major duties:
WORKING CONDITIONS This position requires frequent overnight travel, most often by car. The person in this position may be involved with a Hanford site/facility tour, which could result in exposure to low levels of radiation and may require extensive walking on uneven ground, standing, and/or climbing steep stairways with limited handholds. The position requires extensive reading and analysis and participation in long meetings that often extend into evening hours. As nuclear waste issues are often contentious, the person in this position will occasionally have to deal with hostile persons. The person in the position is also on call for radiation accidents or incidents. EXAM There is no test for this recruitment. Your experience and training will be reviewed for minimum qualifications.
