- Four years of technical or professional experience in environmental protection, environmental control, a natural resource management program or environmental or physical science AND
- A Bachelor’s degree with major study (30 quarter hours or 20 semester hours) in hydrogeology or geochemistry, environmental or physical science, one of the natural sciences, or a closely related field; OR three additional years of relevant experience.
An advanced degree in one of the above areas may substitute for one year of the work experience.
Preference may be given to applicants with experience/training in hydrogeology and experience at or involving the Hanford Nuclear Site.
IF YOU QUALIFY, see the HOW TO APPLY section of this announcement.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The purpose of this position is to evaluate current potential cleanup activities and technologies at the Hanford Site in Washington State – particularly as they impact the vadose zone and groundwater – and determine whether other alternatives may better protect Oregon and the Columbia River. This requires the incumbent to develop and maintain working relationships with technical staffs of various Federal, State and Tribal agencies, contractors, and public interest groups, and to translate and explain highly technical issues to the news media and the lay public. Major duties include:
- Technical Analysis/Evaluation – Initiate technical reviews of Hanford radioactive waste facility operations and cleanup activities, primarily focusing on vadose zone and groundwater contamination, movement, and treatment. This involves intricate problem analysis and problem solving of complex issues across diverse technical fields which may include hydrogeology, geochemistry, geology, and computer modeling of contaminant transport.
- Technical Consultation – Assist the Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board and other technical and advisory boards by acting as technical staff for the Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board and its committees, and reviewing and recommending policy/positions to the Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board, and Department of Energy Nuclear Safety and Siting Division Assistant Director.
- Emergency Preparedness – Participate in emergency response drills and exercises and respond to actual emergencies involving radioactive materials or accidents which may effect Oregon.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires frequent overnight travel, most often by car. The person in this position may be involved with a Hanford site/facility tour, which could result in exposure to low levels of radiation and may require extensive walking on uneven ground, standing, and/or climbing steep stairways with limited handholds. The position requires extensive reading and analysis and participation in long meetings that often extend into evening hours. As nuclear waste issues are often contentious, the person in this position will occasionally have to deal with hostile persons. The person in the position is also on call for radiation accidents or incidents.
EXAM
There is no test for this recruitment. Your experience and training will be reviewed for minimum qualifications. If you meet the “To Qualify” requirements on this announcement, your name will be placed on the list with a code of QLF (qualified).
